The purpose of National Security is to maintain and promote a strong national defense by strengthening and supporting military service members and their families. This program includes development, implementation and monitoring programs and activities that contribute to the practical, emotional and social well-being of military service members and their families.

This program also includes all activities promoting law and order in our communities, as well as interest in the security of our country. Suggested activities include donations to the USO, promoting safety in the streets, respect for laws and law enforcement personnel, emergency planning, blood donor program, ROTC/ JROTC recognition programs, POW-MIA awareness, supporting the Gold Star/Blue Star banner program, and participating in Operation Homefront and welcome home celebrations.

Units are encouraged to honor all enlisted service members and to submit nominations for the Salute to Servicemember Award to the National Security Chairman by the established deadline.

2022-2023 National Security Program Awards Deadlines and Submission Requirements

Unit Award: Most Outstanding Unit National Security Program (per division)

  • All unit entries must be submitted by the department chairman via electronic form by 5 p.m. EST on June 1.

Note: You will receive a confirmation when your award is submitted. Unit members should follow instructions from their department.

Salute to Servicemembers Award

  • Deadline: June 1

Established in 2003, this award honors all enlisted personnel who are currently serving our country in the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard, Space Force, and the National Guard/Reserve. One enlisted servicemember from each branch of service as well as the National Guard/Reserve will be recognized at the American Legion Auxiliary National Convention. Recipients will attend the National Convention as guests of the Auxiliary.

Award submissions become property of the American Legion Auxiliary National Headquarters. Through submission of reports and award entries, the submitter grants nonexclusive reproduction and publication rights to the materials submitted and agrees to have their names and submission published for ALA use or commercial use without additional compensation or permission.

Please fill out the information as completely and accurately as possible. Award certificates will be completed using the information given on this sheet, so please be sure to complete the electronic form in its entirety.

Please refer to the webpage for the specific criteria such as photographs, narrative length, submission deadline, and point of contact. All awards will be mailed to the department office after ALA National Convention. Department presidents may wish to recognize award recipients by presenting them with the award at a department function.
